This is the view from the fist floor of Henry James's house in Rye, East Sussex. James lived here from 1898 till his death, in 1916. The Wings of the Dove, The Ambassadors, and The Golden Bowl were all written while he lived here. Rye was once an important member of the mediaeval Cinque Ports confederation, but the original harbour has been long since silted up. It's a fine place to pass a few hours on a late summer afternoon.
