I've been reading about the history of US conservatism and right wing extremism and an idea that keeps popping up is the notion that it would be easy to "set off" a "race war" in the US. This idea made no sense to me at first.

People who are deeply racist assume everyone else must be too. Everyone is just hiding it for political correctness.

This means they think if someone would only lead the charge and break some windows the taboo on violence would be broken.
