I've been using Ecosia.org as my search engine for quite some time and I'm glad to have helped fund the planting of many trees just by doing online searches.
But, they're killing it. You can't trash usability or you'll lose users, period.
If I go to click a search result and suddenly there's an ad where a real result appeared before, that just leads to anger.
When all real search results are "below the fold" and I must scroll past ads every time... c'mon, really?
Poor usability => no users.
