I had heard there was going to be a street party in the inner city of my home town, so I went there and it was wonderful, street filled with smiling loving people dancing all over the street, including people with babies in prams and toddlers in strollers, people juggling and handing out free food and... then suddenly at less than arm's-length distance from me someone suddenly smashed windows and someone else screamed something like "Let's gooo! Smash it up!" and the people around them were like "WTF are you doing?!? There are children here just a couple of meters from you and why are you two in balaclavas when the organizers said to not be masked?" and an argument broke out which only ended when some people in AFA (antifa) showed up and simply tore the balaclavas off, finding that "heeey, we recognize you, you two are cops!", so people got very, very upset and then the riot cops came to pull their undercover colleagues out.
By then they had killed the party spirit, the people caring for children had to leave and people started hitting back at the police.
Next day front pages declared we had been rioting and attacking police, at a Reclaim the Streets in Stockholm in the 90s.
That is actual typical cop escalation into riots.
Every riot I've seen started similarly, press printing similarly.
