Why certain health screenings may be unnecessary later in life
==========
After age 65, some routine screenings and treatments may not be necessary, such as prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing, urinary tract infections (UTIs) testing, and diabetes testing. Screening for a UTI may be unnecessary and potentially harmful, as many older women have bacteria in their bladders without active infections. PSA screenings in men over 70 often result in false positives. Overtreating diabetes in older people can lead to low blood sugar, which is life-threatening. Common medical tests and screenings for older adults include colonoscopies, mammograms, Pap smears, and screening for anxiety disorders and depression. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes if you are between the ages of 35 and 70, are overweight or obese, and have no symptoms of diabetes. Influenza and pneumococcal vaccines are highly recommended for all older patients.
