Ukraine courting the EU and NATO was the first time Ukraine was moving out of Russia's orbit and control and into the orbit and control of Russia's enemy (we can discuss why they are Russia's enemy if you don't understand it). That is like Mexico becoming a very good friend to Russia.

Russia was at threat of losing access to a very important strategic naval base in Sevastopol which they had been using continuously since 1783, a year-round warm water port.

NATO had deployed weapons and spys near Russia's border. That is like Mexico lining up missile tubes all along the US Southern border. NATO attack of Russia wasn't imminent, and may not have been the intent at all (see my linked note about the security dilemma) but sometimes it is strategically adventageous to attack before the enemy is fully situated.

The security dilemma: because you cannot know the true motivations of your enemy, if your enemy deploys weapons and troops near your border, you cannot know whether that is done strictly in defense or as a preparation for an attack. So you have to presume the worse that they are planning to attack and defend against that. This fundamental inability to understand each other leads to most wars. NATO expansion up to Russia, Russia invasion of Ukraine, US weapons in Poland, Russia moving troops near NATO border, etc.

Maybe we need Elon Musk to create a 'mind meld' neurolink so world leaders can know for sure that the other doesn't wish them any harm. The world leaders can have their brains altered. They can own nothing and be happy. They can eat the bugs. And we should be able to watch it all on TV.
