tl;dr - The US government does not believe in the right to protest because constitutionally guaranteed rights aren't a valid excuse for initiating FBI surveillance which is exactly what happened as soon as protests began on college campuses.
A government who treats critics of its foreign policy like potential terrorists... Hmmm could have sworn this was something that only 'bad governments' did elsewhere.
