npub19fcv2nflra09c6p9xz8c8detwj6uy07u4z4m25qh836mnvxtatdq6aay3c (npub19fc…ay3c) Yeah, and taking a closer look at it off-grid living isn't feasible at solving social and ecological problems, because if we all lived off-grid well we'd have an even more sprawling, inefficient society that does more damage to the environment than density does. Plus, most people making viral posts about their "off grid" lifestyles are deeply embedded in the economy, they are flying in timber via helicopter to build some cabin in Alaska that was otherwise pristine before they got there. It's just the aesthetics of settler colonialism being repackaged as rebellious and eco friendly while in truth it's neither... Rich guys homesteading and selling houses and land all while they're prepping for the collapse of society and branding themselves as radical green activists. Maybe it's just selection bias because those are the ones making viral videos, but I doubt that the off camera modern homesteaders are doing it to save the world either.
There is definitely something to be said for self sustaining and efficient infrastructure, we absolutely do need that, and supply chains should be more local and more robust to deal with any potential crises, but rugged individualism cannot be the be-all end-all.
