Major updates need to be automatic. They should not have to ask for permission because they often include critical security updates.
I had to help someone today who was on macOS Big Sur on an M1 MacBook Pro. This doubles over to Linux distros like Ubuntu which merely ask you for a major update, but don't install it. Worse, there are distros that make you manually configure a file like Alpine or Debian or worse yet, force you to reinstall like elementary OS (they are working on it). Or they can be like Windows and not work for random reasons.
It's an unseen pain to users. They might never know they need to update. Better yet, do it for them and make it the default. Nobody changes default settings, so why expect them to update?
