I'm skeptical .io will truly disappear as a TLD, given how popular it is.
It's true that according to the current ICANN rules, it would be sunset within a few years after the British Indian Ocean Territory ceases to exist, which the UK have agreed will eventually happen.
But there's so much weight behind the .io TLD in the tech world, I think it's extremely likely something will be worked out to keep it going.
I mean, we even have a .zip TLD now. If that's ok, surely .io is not impossible.
