Can report as eyewitness that the chess district of Manhattan is real, and there's a park there where people gather and get their chess on, as recently as 2015 when we were there.
Libraries are a traditional spot for this sort of thing in other markets, and there used to a downtown mall here in Winnipeg in the 80s with a giant chess board in the floor tiles where a somewhat cliqueish gang used to play.
