Thinking about stuff. Canonically, I/Kay started out as a fluffy coyote, and the same time I went full-time squeaky as far as sona IRL (2010), is when Kay would've been transformed. Because it was a supernatural being insinuated at being related-to/inspired-by Coyote/Coyotl, the transformation is a means of saving Kay's life in a fashion that amuses it, with a secondary intent of Kay later discovering abilities and powers from the form to become a sort of trickster avatar.

Initially, Kay was afraid with the change, worried about getting hurt easily, depressed, anxious, afraid of rejection from peers. He had another year or two left of school and was mortified by the thought of attending while like that. But he managed to, with mental health help and guidance from friends, come to accept and (initially fake-begrudgingly) enjoy his new form. He even worked with the school to develop a new polymer, a capacitive, flexible waterproof material he was able to apply to his finger-pads and clawtips to let him interact with touchscreens and touchpads better. (A stylus all the time is clunky!)

By the time he graduated he fully embraced his new nature. (I haven't figured out what his parents think, derp.) And he started discovering he could temporarily transform someone by coating them in his clear, liquid-latex saliva. Increasingly he learned how to control their resulting form or colors, even matching his own detail -- he's seamless latex but has color fade transitions like real fur between his markings, primary, an underbelly. And with his first try temporary cloning, he unlocked a new level of control ease, soon finding he could ooze black liquid latex from his finger beans just by willing it, with a purple aura around his irises when he started to do that, as if a sign of his new power.

(continued, but posting it unlisted so watch follow-up!)
