I agree with you, however one thing I've noticed in the last ~20 years is that children's clothing is extremely gendered now! I always tried going less girly with my girls. Ok with my younger daughter, but my younger daughter felt "plain" clothes were boyish and worried about standing out. Depends on the kid I reckon.
