Using a Linux or de-google'd "smart" phone is a bit like driving a Tesla with hacked firmware. In the case of the car, you've reclaimed a little bit of autonomy but you're still participating in car culture. In the case of the rooted phone, you can install and use it the way you like but it's still a device that is designed for digital consumer culture.
(And to all my smart-phone owning friends. I still love you. My beef is with that infernal machine.)
