How about PoW-based puzzle challenges (as described by Juels et al) for clients to solve (solves for embeds too?) with difficulty adjustments based on current count of connections?
Wouldn't that be easier to implement and more user friendly, while also introducing significant costs to attacking the system and little costs to legitimate users?
