The reason they are smug is because they have won in the present, the fact that a decade or two from now there will be jackboots kicking down their doors for their (frankly abhorrent) tweets and policy decisions doesn't matter to them. What matters is that they owned the chuds for one more election cycle, while said "chuds" become angrier, angrier, and more numerous.
