We water. I have to grow most of my veg in containers on my driveway, so I'm watering no matter what. Right now that means topping up the earth boxes twice a day, which keeps things from wilting.
A real winner would be a vegetable that didn't mind shade in the summer. Then it could go in the ground beds after the winter veg comes out.
