Well, my friends, this is a sad post for me. (Cara)
We’re coming to an end of a chapter, and I need your help.

The past three years have brought one cataclysmic change after the other into my life, and that of my ducks. For me, it has been the slow moving train wreck of my marriage, ending in divorce. My ducks fared even worse, with over half of my sweet feather puppies being killed last December by a neighbor’s dog on a rampage. I was out of town at the time.

My personal life is looking up; I have a new partner, and will be moving back to my hometown of Houston to be with him for a few months while we get our figurative ducks in a row for a move to Oregon. I may even do a little permaculture while I’m there. Count on it, actually. 🙂

My literal ducks need a new home, immediately. I’m flying to Houston October 7. I’m not able to take them with me to Houston, and my ex isn’t able to care for them.
I have had a new home lined up twice in as many years, but it seems many of us are experiencing sudden and drastic changes in life circumstances, so once again I’m caught in a bind with the clock ticking.

There are currently 25 ducks. Three are elderly and bonded, and must stay together. All of the others are 2 years or younger. Ducks need a flock, so while I won’t insist they all go to the same home, I’m not comfortable sending fewer than three to any one place.

The older ducks are a Blue Swedish drake and duck, and an Indian Runner duck.
The younger ones are a combination of domestic mallards and what I refer to as “brown ducks”. The original brown ducks were rescues, a mallard x Indian Runner cross. At the time, I was keeping mallards, runners, Welsh Harlequins, Cayugas, and Blue Swedish, and the genetics of the flock reflect that heritage. They’re small ducks, and look as much like Khaki Campbells as any other domestic duck breed. The ducks are prolific layers and good mothers; the drakes are less aggressively oversexed than some of the others I have kept, such as the Welsh Harlequins.

At a minimum, ducks need:
Secure, predator-proof night time housing
Fenced yard
Clean bedding (straw preferred as it absorbs more moisture)
Clean water for drinking (buckets) and bathing (shallow tubs or kiddie pools)
Appropriate food (a pelleted feed formulated for ducks)
Grit, and oyster shell during laying
At least occasional fresh food, such as edible weeds, salad greens, sprouted barley, etc. They are able to forage for much of this during the growing season.

I’m located in Caldwell, Idaho. Message me if you’re interested in adopting some or all of my ducks. I’m willing to drive them a couple of hours to get them into a good situation.
Thanks, friends.

The photo is of Violet, one of the original “brown ducks”, and her babies.
