Ballard’s short story *Report on an Unidentified Space Station* years later, I found it even more intentionally focuses on the liminality of a strange space, rather than the scary or threatening nature of such a locale. The place is sort of a vast transit terminal, full of familiar things, but not conducting one to any actual transit or destinations.
