The Fediverse shouldn't aim to grow indefinitely in user numbers like big tech social media platforms. Instead, its focus should be on attracting individuals and organizations that create meaningful content and serve as valuable references. This includes creative voices across diverse topics, experts and academics, activists, politicians, cultural and educational institutions, and official accounts for organizations fundamental to democracy.

While I don't currently see the Fediverse becoming a hub for influencers (phew!), journalists, or artists en masse, some members of the latter two groups could have a significant impact here. The challenge lies in their reliance on follower counts and visibility, which are better catered to by platforms that exploit unethical algorithms and ad-driven models.

The Fediverse should prioritize being a space for constructive dialogue. This vision aligns with the values of those who are already aware of the risks posed by centralized social media platforms: systems that prioritize unsustainable growth at any cost—even if it fuels disinformation, undermines democracies, threatens freedom of speech, or marginalizes vulnerable groups.

What are the key challenges in making the Fediverse a meaningful and diverse communication space?
