now we're in this uncomfortable state where a settings page maybe has a save button but often doesn't and there's no consistency. the button, if it does exist, is not properly designed so you notice it. like it'll be below the page view and a bland color so it doesn't stand out

if the button doesn't exist there's often no visual indication that your settings *were* saved, or any indication of what you changed, or any way to easily revert. yes there are some pages that do this well but they stand out as exceptions

I have no idea how we got here but my wild ass guess is it's fundamentally because of the preponderance of dogshit web frameworks where the dev is totally disconnected from the page design and just uses whatever the default is

I'm okay with not needing an explicit save button but just taking the button away and silently saving things is not good design either
