Yeah look at all that 'unused land' that sustained millions of people composed of hundreds of distinct societies sustainably for tens of thousands of of years? yeah no, i'm pretty sure they were using it before Europeans stole it.

Also, so what if they didn't "use" every inch of farmable land, maybe they had no reason to do that, maybe it's good to have a farm or a forest in itself, because it's nice to have that, a rich ecosystem you can hunt and forage in. The native American reverence for nature has obvious practical benefits. The settler obsession with turning every bit of wild nature into dead capital smdh.

It's also the case that with much of the central and western united states, it's just not good farmland, maybe many tried to farm these areas and it never worked. Notice not even within 100 years of serious cultivation by anglo settlers and The Dust Bowl happened.
