They US Navy controls comms aboard ship. Full stop. Nothing goes out unless they allow it. I would have expected a lockdown even if the ship hadn't been attacked, it's standard practice in a war zone. Certainly if they are trying to cover something up they have the ability and the desire to shut it all down.
I think the ship was probably hit, but probably not nearly as badly as the Houthis want to make it seem. It will be up to the Navy brass to make the announcement, no CO is going to say anything on his own.
I don't have an argument re: drone shots though, except they've kept out to sea far enough to avoid most land-based drones. Certainly that won't matter to Iran.
