So, I've been sampling some of what is called Japanese comfort stories. Sometimes they're called Japanese Cosy Mysteries. But unlike the Western version, they seldom contain any conflict or twists. They often contain cats and androgynous young men and are often set in restaurants, cafes or bookstores.
They are, unsurprisingly, mostly read by women.
These elements - the cats, the settings, and the androgynous young men are clearly signifiers for the Japanese of emotional refuge.
