First, he moves the bird-feeder: it's hanging from a tree, and the squirrels just climb down onto it. So he moves it to a poll, but the squirrels don't care much: they just climb up it.
So Grandpa greases the poll and the squirrels figure out that if they're persistent enough, they can get the grease off the poll. Okay.
So he gets one of those domes that stops things from climbing up from the ground, and the squirrels use it as a spot to land and start jumping from the tree.
So, finally, Grandpa takes a BB gun out and takes a shot at a squirrel, but narrowly misses the head and puts a hole in a squirrel's ear. Grandma starts crying and telling him he's terrible and cruel and he decides the problem has no politically tenable solution, so the squirrels keep stealing birdseed and Grandma scolded him every time she saw the poor squirrel with a hole in its ear.
