Made some tests on the current status of font rendering in selected apps today.

Subpixel rendering takes into account the red, green and blue stripes each pixel is made of on most screens, treating each third as if it was a small grayscale pixel. The result is that the image is somewhat sharper (but, compared to grayscale antialiasing, does not give significantly higher fidelity). In enlarged screenshots, we can detect this technique by the coloured fringes of the glyphs.
