My current employer has given us devs Github Copilot licenses to use at work, and I've been trying to get it integrated in my worktime for the last three days. For those who may not know it, Copilot is a LLM for coders, like chatGPT but a bit more ethical (it's trained on the millions of open source projects hosted on github).

I'm extremely unimpressed. In these three days, the only suggestions from copilot I've used are the ones that my development tools already provided (things like autocompleting the params of a function). For any suggestion longer than a line, all of them has been either:

Wrong

Trivial.

It feels pretty telling that in the github documentation, the example they use as a test case is making copilot write a function to calculate the number of days between two dates. Yeah, the result is great. But that's also the kind of function any seasoned developer takes about 30 seconds to write.

So yeah, I don't think this is going to make my productivity go to unseen peaks. It may save me ... single-digit minutes per day at the easier part of my job (typing code), and I'm not even sure about that.
