This story scares me, because it's making me realise we're getting closer and closer to a situation in which I no longer understand how tech works.

And this is extra scary for me, since I'm usually other people's tech support.

Yet this whole ordeal utterly baffles me.

I still don't really get what went wrong here. Some kind of mismatch in the encryption between the TV and set-top box or something??? I guess????
