Under the hood it is a BSD descendant (using a highly evolved Mach microkernel), named Darwin. So the kernel interfaces are indeed Unix derived, even moreso than Linux, which itself was modeled after Minix. Some fragments of my own IPv6 related code from NetBSD are in the macOS kernel 😁

But the relevance of that low-level definition to, say, a subreddit about learning programming is fairly low.
