I found that weird myself, because from what I've heard the Epicureans have a philosophy not very difficult to my own, and so I was surprised when he appeared to wholesale denounce them, but I then realised I was taking the text too seriously
I find virtue theory to be lame and perhaps even a spook myself as it can justify or condemn anything, although I reach a similar conclusion through game theory, where acting in an overtly selfish manner is often detrimental compared to acting in a wiser selfish manner.
(And this is even more true the more egoists are in a population - higher chance of getting retaliation for stupid shit than from christians)
And the converse as you mentioned, though I could live like Diogenes I doubt I'd enjoy that.
I study compsci and there's almost no math in my program, so yeah it's mainly interest in the pursuit of knowledge (among other things like that it remains a challenge and will be useful later)
