The only advantage is that you get an advance on something that might never earn out(*). With the exception of the occasional small press, your publisher will expect the author to do 90% of the promotional work, and if the book doesn't take off, it's stuck there until it's deemed out of print, at which point you can buy it back and see if you can get somewhere with it.
More critically for me right now is you can't tell your publisher who to work with. Yesterday I blogged on how all the learning I've done to advertise on Meta and Amazon is moot because I no longer plan to send money to people who support a fascist. I can just imagine the laughter I'd get if I told one of the big five imprints to stop doing that.
* A well run Kickstarter campaign can raise more than the advance you'd get anyway. Advances for new authors seem to average around US$4,000. Paltry.
