To your comment about certain ppl only liking free markets when it suits them; licensing is not the only way to protect IP, a company could just not release their proprietary code/secrets if licensing (which is enforced by government in this case) is not accessible. Clearly that would have ramifications in a space that values the ability to verify things, but the point remains.
You can have competition without having all ideas,trade secrets,code, etc. shared among competitors. I agree that consumers would benefit if all information was shared so whoever can implement it best can do so, but I also understand that businesses are incentivized to keep a competitive advantage. Doing so is part of the competing.
More power to those that can keep the doors open while being FOSS. Their generosity is much appreciated, but I’m not going to complain about for profit business opting to protecting their work.
Which is exactly what seth was doing by pointing out that coinkite’s firmware is no longer Open Source, but rather Verifiable. He failed to show evidence of coinkite making claims to being open source after they changed their license. That’s why the ‘acting in bad faith’ comments.
