I do plenty of sewing! Mainly saddle stitch but between my wife and I we have a wide range of sewing, upholstery, embroidery, etc experience.
I would specifically get curved upholstery/mattress needles for this, that’s the big thing you’ll need. For thread, any leather working thread should do ya - I personally really like Ritza thread and buy it from Buckleguy, but you don’t need to go to that specific retailer or thread really.
Buckleguy is my standard leather retailer, but they ship from MA so there might be better places to buy from around here. Tandy really isn’t all that bad and there’s one north of seattle if you want to go in person to a store. They can also be helpful for advice; calling in to a Tandy will usually get you someone knowledgeable about the Tandy catalogue at a minimum.
I’ll peek at my bookshelf and see if I have a book rec for you. Not sure I do though.
