As a current Inkscape user with some minor history with AutoCAD (I don't remember AutoCAD in 2002 had this feature), I don't mind as long as it can be toggled.
I use Inkscape to make some scientific graphs ready for presentation or sometimes publication, and I can see that this feature and be handy when working with lots of data points.
