exposure is calculated automatically but "big shadowy thing atop bright thing" is a pathological situation for cameras, even fancy ones
apparently there's an exposure compensation slider in the default camera app now (up arrow at top, +/- icon) and if you push it to +1.5 or +2
backlit shots will come out a bit more evenly, crushing the highlights instead
