Mine would accept an input of number of changes, and fast foward until than number had occured.
The typical way to use it was put in '1' when ads started. It had a ~75% chance of resuming early, but you'd still skipped a lot of ads, rarely would it fail to resume before the show was back on.
Edit: Looks like I grew up with a hecking badass vhs system very similar to Sylvania Hi-Fi VHS VCR VC3645GY01. Something similar to the f.f.scan button, but it went both ways and you could set how many scan 'changes' before resuming play.
