I just read about 1/5th of the book Caesar's Messiah, which makes the case that Jesus & his prediction of the destruction of Jerusalem was a myth, created by the Roman imperial family AFTER they destroyed Jerusalem. Kind of a really roundabout way of saying "we kicked your asses because God hates you".
What's interesting in all this is the parallels to American imperial policy. The Romans didn't forbid religions, they embraced all of them - they just insisted on choosing the priests (and rewriting the scriptures when needed).
The American machine has an uncanny way of embracing rebelliousness, then redefining it into obedience.
