Genocides are always sketchy in their veracity, people find this surprising because of the lies they been taught about the Holocaust, but it makes sense when you think about it.
Every conflict is rife with tales of massacres, its not hard to spin one, or a string of them, into a story that one side is trying to systematically eliminate the civilians of the other.
My favorite way to illustrate this is always what Wikipedia says about the Breton genocide during the French revolution, reading it always gives a chuckle because the situation is so familiar to anyone that ever tried to find out if the Holocaust actually happened:
