The problem is, in my view, very many journalists or commentators who have something worthwhile hearing have lapses in their past that might cause us to discount who they are in present. My approach is to listen to what seems worth hearing, never dispensing with critical caution, and avoid working myself into a purist corner where I can't listen to almost anyone who doesn't meet my ideological criteria.
