Backstory: our family farm had Ayrshires. Lots of them!
My Mom's aunt and uncle had a Brown Swiss dairy. They gave her a calf as a wedding present; her current 3 Swisses are descendants.
She had trouble getting the Ayrshires bred, and a long string of bull calves. So an Ayrshire had a Holstein/Ayr calf ... after a couple of gens, breeding back to one breed you can register. So that's where the Holsteins come from.
