Plod plod plod went Silver's hooves through the snow. The trees grew closer. More wattles. Jeffery jerked awake when a man appeared at Silver's head, took the bridle and began to lead Silver. The man was dressed like a Zulu warrior of a hundred years ago, He carried a stabbing spear, and a rawhide shield with a pattern on it. He wore a feathered headdress and very little else. His face looked vaguely familiar, and Jeffery wondered where he had seen him before. It didn't seem to matter somehow. The man was taking him somewhere, perhaps to get hot chocolate. The man didn't seem to be worried by the cold and the snow, even though he wasn't dressed for it. He wore crossed bandoleers. There seemed to be something wrong with that. Jeffery wondered why, and then thought a bandoleer was for holding bullets, but the man wasn't carrying a rifle. The man turned and looked at Jeffery, and he saw that the bandoleer had no cartridges either, but something that looked like seed pods. Jeffery looked up at his face and then screamed. There was no face, but a grinning skull. Jeffery was suddenly awake again. The man turned and led Silver towards the trees. Silver plodded after him, as though hypnotised.
