I say "abolish," not "defund," because if you say "defund," you invite someone to ask "by how much?" Pretty soon they're worrying aloud that reducing police budgets by 10% might be too extreme; how about 7%? No, 3% would be more prudent, but phase it in over 5 years--and the discussion goes wonky, people tune out, nobody cares because there's always a new issue coming down the pike in this hellscape anyhow, and this particular issue has now been deemed "too complicated."

It's more difficult to do that with "abolish," though I have seen people try.
