Question: "Guru's Guru, I often feel like people expect too much from me—whether it’s my family, friends, or at work. It’s hard to figure out how to do what I want without disappointing them. How can I stop feeling so much pressure and start living the way I want?"
Let's start with the first part: "I often feel like people expect too much from me...." What you are really saying is that people honor you. That's a good thing!! If they didn't honor and respect you they would not expect things from you. The problem is in your saying "people expect TOO MUCH." Drop that kind of thinking! They don't expect "Too much," they are just honoring you as being capable! Understanding that gives you the freedom to, as you say, "live the way you want." Their honoring you doesn't restrict that.
And the next part: Don't even think about "doing what you want without disappointing others!" You already have their respect. You can ONLY keep their respect by being true to yourself.
Yes, I said in another post, "Be true to your heart," and I'd said it as kind of an 'obvious.' But it is really all there is! So your final question of "How can I stop feeling ... pressure and start living the way I want?" Well, you know the answer! Just do it! The notion of "pressure" from others is more of the 'victim' mentality! Drop that! No one is 'doing' anything to you. Such speaking/thinking is a fool's errand! You can 'stop feeling so much pressure and start living the way YOU want' by getting off your high horse of victimization and just continuing to be the wonderful person that others (and you) know that you are!
In summary: Your notion that others might be 'disappointed in you', is a useless trope. Others obviously respect you! Honor that and be yourself!!
