I see your point especially on the issue, e.g. of AI. I don't think it's technology alone though, I would risk entertaining a more general approach: it's progress. We've raised our level of living in the west so far that ethics and society have been unable to cope with the momentum. We've also rebelled against tradition because we've reached the level of comfort that allowed us hubris in believing we could mess with the very fundamentals of our bodies/society without destroying them. I think it's just "idle hands make for ... uh.. the devil's work"? Don't know the proverb in English. I think we got too bored and decided to jump off the roof to see what happens.
