Mississippi is one of the worst states to be charged with a crime if you're poor. The state supreme court tried to fix that by requiring that all defendants have an attorney at every stage of their defense. In Mississippi, you can languish in jail pre-indictment with no one assigned to your case. The mandate goes into effect Saturday, but only four of 23 circuit courts have a plan to implement it. Someone will probably have to sue to get justice.
