One of the more interesting of the many motivations I had to create what later became Friendica, Hubzilla, and Streams was my annoyance that Facebook birthdays are always on the wrong day if your friends are on different sides of the international date line. This is a big deal if you're in Australia and have American friends. These platforms can let you know the right time to send greetings in the birthday person's own timezone. Not yours.
