Clemens Kalischer was born in Germany in 1921. He and his family fled to Paris in 1933 as the Nazis gained power. He was detained by the French government in a camp in 1939 in #France, eventually released and arrived in #NYC in 1942.
Kalischer gained notice in part for his documentary #photos of arriving refugees. His dockside images of displaced persons arriving from #Europe propelled his career as a photojournalist.
