"Julie Mell’s two-volume work begins by discussing the narrative of
Jews and money laid out above. She calls it “the meta-narrative of the
Jews’ role in the economy.” The problem, according to Mell, is that this
narrative has been so widely accepted, not because it is factually estab-
lished but because “it acknowledges the association of Jews and money
but counters the ugly barb of selfish profit” (Mell, p. 1:7). The metanarra-
tive has helped us talk about the impossibly fraught and difficult topic of
Jews and money by turning a negative stereotype into a positive one: yes,
Jews were bankers and had a lot of money, but they used it for good and
helped develop Europe’s economy in positive ways. However, Mell
argues that the basis of the narrative—the idea that Jews were medieval
Europe’s principal credit providers—is incorrect. Accordingly, it is not
enough to put a positive spin on the metanarrative: it needs to be closely
reexamined."
