How do you know upward growth is done and it's just flowers and beans? I thought about it this year but wasn't bold enough...so I've been fairly diligent about hitting the blackfly when they turned up. Likewise on a couple of Dahlias in fact. But I find they don't often come back if I get in there and take them out manually so it's doable with a little patience. Waiting for pods to get to size now.
