Stumbled across my recent mess with #pixelfed again, from a totally different angle: As posted like ages ago, at some point I had the chance to have some of my photos featured in my city neighbourhoods print magazine. And in order to promote these things there, I left a link to my pixelfed account all along with it. Printed on paper. Now it's like two or three years later and the account is gone. And I'm slowly understanding yet another angle of people having a hard time moving these kind of addresses elsewhere. Like ... moving off X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, with in worst case your links to these profiles printed onto business cards, business letters, the covers of books, ... and knowing these all at some point will be rendered dead links, even more likely so in an environment in which a lot of instances seem to pop up and vanish in a rather short time frame. Even more difficult, so, to understand why (unlike micro.blog, Tumblr or maybe Bluesky at some point) the Fediverse, here, didn't early on fully embrace the ability to use a custom domain for a profile even when used on a shared instance. Not even talking about the ease of identification of links when linked to a Twitter, Instagram, ... "icon" in print which might be a different beast to tame.
